 HORTENSE ELLIS ARTIST - CLEMENT "COXSONE" DODD PRODUCER

                                          Mr. Clement "Coxsone" Dodd                         "Why Birds Fly"

Clement "Coxsone" Dodd gave many Jamaican singers their first start in the business.  The Kingston street on which his Studio One label was and still is based (Brentford Road) has now been renamed Studio One Boulevard.  Mr. Dodd operated several labels in addition to the main Studio One label and the best known of these is probably N D Records.  Hortense cut her first sides under Mr. Dodd's guidance.  He is known to have remarked on one occasion when talking about Hortense "she was my best (female artist) ... but she had too many babies".  After starting with Coxsone, Hortense went on to record with other producers such as Bunny Lee and Winston Riley, but returned to Coxsone around 1972 to record "Secretly", "Why Birds Fly" and "Sitting In The Park".

=====================================

* indicates a track included on the 2006 "I'm Still In Love With You" CD
^ indicates that Hortense recut the track (different version) later on in her  career.  For example,  Hortense re-recorded "Secretly" for Dudley Swaby (Manzie)

I'm hoping this page can be expanded/improved in the very near future
