"STILL IN LOVE" - Hortense Ellis & Derrick Morgan
Conflict COLP 2005

This is a vinyl LP,  not available on CD,  containing a very pleasant selection of songs BUT I
do not consider it to be a duet LP in the sense of two performers singing together.  This is
more of a "shared" LP insofar as Derrick and Hortense perform separately on their respective tracks.  Derrick and Hortense recorded many beautiful tracks together but these are sadly absent.  The inclusion in this collection of "Meekly Wait" dates this LP around 1977 - I have a copy in front of me as I type these notes, but no year is shown either on the sleeve or on the label.  Unfortunately, like all Hortense LP's from the late seventies, this is extremely rare and is even less likely than the two solo LP's detailed on the previous page to be found on eBay.  If you live in or near London, your best bet is Music & Video Exchange in either Camden Town or Notting Hill Gate.  A second-hand (pre-owned) copy is better than none at all.

"FEEL SO GOOD" - Derrick Morgan & Hortense Ellis
Attack ATLP 1016

Another extremely rare (virtually unobtainable) vinyl LP unreleased on CD.  I display the sleeve from the Canadian release as, amazingly, the British cover,  although more striking in design, does not feature Hortense's name;  and even on this cover, it is only Mr. Morgan's image visible.  I have, unfortunately, never seen this LP to either know what the back cover looks like or the correct order in which the songs appear on the LP.  I do have "Shirley Come Back" myself on a 45 and another two songs "I Am Leaving" and "I'm Gone" were both released as 45's in Jamaica with the latter also released in the UK on the Attack label.

Feel So Good; I'm Gone; I'm Gonna Put My Foot Down; I'm Leaving; Let's Dream; Oh Be Generous; Reggae Train; Shirley Come Back; So Long Baby; Will You Marry Me

"LOVERS ROCK" - Johnny Clarke & Hortense Ellis and Pat Kelly
Third World TDWD 7
This beauty was actually Vol. 1 of 4.  On Vol. 4, Johnny Clarke was replaced by Derrick Morgan (Derrick & Hortense rather than Johnny & Hortense).  Hortense was not featured on Vols. 2 and 3.  The tracks on all four LP's  have been reissued on CD's which do not bear the same title and contain more tracks than these original LP issues.  These are listed further down the page.  I include this one vinyl LP of the series for sentimental reasons.  Quite simply, if I had never heard this particular LP (played to me by a friend),  I would never have met Hortense Ellis,  and a substantial period of my life would have panned out totally differently.  The first track including Hortense on this LP that I heard was "You're Mine".  All tracks on this LP have a soft R & B flavor as opposed to a reggae beat - some might refer to it as "big people's music".  It is not to everybody's taste as I discovered recently.  A gentleman known as "Door Peeper" (actually a highly respected music journalist and author) heard "You're Mine" and described it as "unsaleable rubbish".  (One man's meat ... etc. etc.)  Aside from the Johnny Clarke/Hortense Ellis duets, there are solo performances from Pat Kelly.

Baby Come Back To Me (Johnny Clarke/Hortense Ellis); Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings (Pat Kelly); In Paradise (JC/HE);  Both Sides Now (PK); Dearest (JC/HE); You Are Everything (PK); You're Mine (JC/HE); My Way (PK); This Is My Story (JC/HE); People Get Ready (PK).
